Sep 05, 2019 Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) helps keep Windows computers free from prevalent malware. MSRT finds and removes threats and reverses the changes made by these threats. MSRT is generally released monthly as part of Windows Update or as a standalone tool available here for download.
When the detection and malware removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malware was detected and removed.
*The Malicious Software Removal Tool will continue to be provided for Windows XP through July 14, 2015; it will also continue to be delivered automatically via Windows Update and for download via the Download Center.

See the list of malicious software cleaned by this tool.
Note: The version of the tool delivered by Microsoft Update and Windows Update runs in the background and then reports if a malware infection is found. To run this tool more than once a month, use the version on this web page or install the version that is available at the Microsoft Download Center.
Because computers can appear to function normally when infected, it's a good idea to run this tool regularly even if your computer seems to be fine. You should also use up-to-date antivirus software, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, to help protect your computer from other malware. Windows 8.1 includes antivirus and antispyware software called Windows Defender. Windows Defender for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 replaces Microsoft Security Essentials.
